Fishing for Chinook salmon, also known as King salmon, in the Aysén region is a rare and powerful experience that leaves a lasting impression. This iconic migratory fish, a true giant of cold waters, thrives in Chilean rivers and offers anglers fights of exceptional intensity.
Some days of the trip may be entirely dedicated to pursuing this species, as its presence completely transforms the fishing approach. Late-season runs are often spectacular, with impressive fish capable of pushing even the strongest tackle and the most experienced anglers to their limits.
No specific permit or additional fees are required for this fishery, allowing sessions to naturally adapt when a salmon is spotted, with the opportunity to shift from trout fishing to salmon fishing depending on river conditions and activity.
When facing some of the largest salmonids in the world, the sensations take on a whole new scale: explosive takes, prolonged battles, raw power and tackle pushed to the edge. Encountering a Chinook in Patagonia remains a highlight of the stay, an intense and deeply memorable experience.

Salmon fishing with spinning gear in Patagonia requires strong equipment suited to the power of the fish and the fast-moving currents in which they live.
It is recommended to use a rod rated between 30 and 50 g, combined with a size 3500 or 4000 reel, spooled with a strong line equivalent to 80/100 diameter. This setup will allow you to fish in good conditions and effectively control fights that can be long and intense.
Lures adapted to powerful currents will complete the setup and help maximise your chances during casting and retrieval.
A two-handed fly rod with a shooting head or skagit line is the ideal equipment.
For Chinook deep fishing is necessary, so sinking lines are recommended.
